Eligibility for a Family Visa in the UAE

Expatriate residents can sponsor their family members to live in the UAE if they meet the following conditions:

• Hold a valid UAE residency visa as an investor, employee, or partner.
• Earn a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

Who Can You Sponsor for a UAE Family Visa?

Sponsoring family members for a UAE Family Visa is generally easier for male expatriates than for female residents. If you hold a valid UAE Residence Visa, you can sponsor the following family members:

Wife

• A male expatriate can sponsor his wife.
• Muslim residents may sponsor two wives, subject to specific conditions set by the GDRFA.

Sons

• Sons can be sponsored until the age of 18.
• Sons over 18 can be sponsored up to 21 years old, provided they are students.
• If studying abroad, they must enter the UAE at least once every six months to keep the visa valid.

Daughters

• Daughters can be sponsored only if they are unmarried, with no age restrictions.

Parents

To sponsor parents, the following conditions must be met:

• Both parents must be sponsored unless one has passed away.
• A security deposit of AED 2,500 per parent is required (subject to change).

• The sponsor must earn a minimum salary of AED 20,000 or AED 19,000 plus a two-bedroom accommodation.

Stepchildren

• Sponsorship is allowed with a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the biological parent.  Stepchildren's visas are valid for one year and are renewable annually.

Sponsorship Requirements for a Family Visa in UAE  

Expatriate residents with a valid UAE residence permit/visa can sponsor their family members, provided they meet the following conditions:

Financial Requirement

The sponsor must earn a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

Medical Fitness Requirement

• Male and female dependents aged 18 and above must undergo and pass a medical fitness test at approved UAE health centers.
• Medically unfit individuals will not be granted a residence visa.
• Residents diagnosed with dormant or inactive pulmonary tuberculosis may still receive a one-year Health Fitness Certificate for Residence, subject to medical treatment and follow-up.

Key Notes

• A mother can sponsor her children in special cases approved by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP).
• A resident sponsor has 60 days to apply for dependents’ residence visas after their arrival in the UAE on an entry permit.
• A resident can sponsor parents, but their residence visa is issued on a yearly basis, regardless of the sponsor’s visa duration.
• Profession is no longer a requirement for an expatriate worker to sponsor family visas.

Family Visa Requirements for Sponsoring  Wife and Children 

An expatriate resident can sponsor a residence visa for their wife and children, provided they meet the sponsorship requirements outlined by the UAE government.

• Sponsoring Your Wife: The sponsor must prove a marital relationship by submitting an attested marriage certificate in Arabic or a certified Arabic translation.
• Sponsoring Two Wives:  In exceptional cases, a Muslim resident may be allowed to sponsor two wives, subject to specific ICP conditions.
• Sponsoring Daughters: A resident can sponsor his unmarried daughter(s) without age restrictions.
• Sponsoring Sons: A son can be sponsored until the age of 25. Sons of determination (those with special needs) can be sponsored without age restrictions.
• Sponsoring Newborns: A residence visa must be applied for within 120 days of birth to avoid fines.
• Sponsoring Stepchildren: Allowed under GDRFA conditions, including:

• Stepchildren’s residence visas are valid for one year, renewable annually.

Family Visa Requirements for Sponsoring  Parents in the UAE  

An expatriate employee can sponsor both parents for a one-year residence visa, subject to the following conditions:

Key Requirements:

• A security deposit must be paid for each parent, as per the immigration department’s regulations.
• Both parents must be sponsored together unless valid proof is provided that one parent is deceased or the parents are divorced.
• The sponsor must prove that they are the sole provider and that no one else is available to care for their parents in their home country.
• The expatriate must meet the minimum salary requirement as stipulated by the UAE authorities.
• The sponsor must obtain a medical insurance policy for each parent with at least the minimum required coverage, to be renewed annually.

Family Visa: Sponsoring a UAE Citizen’s Spouse, Parent, and Child

A UAE citizen’s spouse, parent, or child who holds a foreign passport is eligible for a 5-year residence visa without the requirement to work in the UAE. In such cases, the UAE citizen acts as the sponsor.

A foreign widow or divorced woman who is the mother of a UAE citizen can also obtain a residence visa without employment.  In this case, the oldest child serves as the sponsor.

UAE Family Visa Validity

A UAE Family Visa is issued for 1, 2, or 3 years, depending on the sponsor’s visa type and category. The visa remains valid as long as the sponsor’s residence visa is active.

• Validity Period: Typically 1, 2, or 3 years, renewable before expiry.
• Dependence on Sponsor: If the sponsor’s visa expires or is canceled, the family visa also becomes invalid.
• Grace Period: After visa expiry or cancellation, a 30-day grace period is granted for renewal to avoid fines or legal issues.

To maintain legal residency in the UAE, dependents should renew their visas within the grace period and ensure the sponsor’s visa remains valid.

Documents Required for a Dependent Visa in the UAE

To sponsor a spouse and children, the following documents are required:

• Completed application form, submitted online or at a registered typing office
• Colored passport copies of the spouse and children
• Passport-sized photographs of the spouse and children
• Medical clearance certificate for the spouse and children aged 18 and above
• Copy of the sponsor’s employment contract or company agreement
• Salary certificate from the employer confirming the sponsor’s monthly income
• Attested marriage certificate (must be in English or legally translated into Arabic)
• Registered tenancy agreement (Ejari)

How to Apply for a UAE Family Visa?
